Huawei User Manual

Thank you for using Facemaker for Huawei, Xiaomi Amazfit, full Android and Garmin watches.

This software isn't in anyway associated with any of these companies. It's a totally unnoficial way to build watchfaces for your watch.
This is a software under constant development, so expect bugs. I'm still working actively on developing new features and I intend to make this the best software available for building watch faces, so expect more on each release.
Other brands will be targeted too, so this software should and will support more brands in the future.

Since v090b, Facemaker added support for Amazfit watches.
In it's current state, you'll be able to build your own custom and fully functional watch face after reading this manual.
Also, there have been reports of virus false positives...
They're ridiculous and that's the only comment you'll get from me if you contact me on that matter.
I'm using my true name and email address, you have nothing to fear from my software, except awesomeness (I hope)!

If you don't like reading manuals, take a look at my videos on Youtube, where I always build a watchface from scratch.
But I find that reading this manual will be of upmost importance if you want to really learn how to use Facemaker.
I'm also recording videos for all widget types, explaining how to use them, so this manual will slowly improve with time.

Facemaker is available to download on The Facemaker Megashare repository.
You have two versions, Windows and Linux. Download the right one and unpack it somewhere on your hard drive.
MacOS version doesn't work after compiling unfortunately, and I don't own a Mac in order to debug (and never will buy one, I hate the Apple closed environment), so, here's my sincere apologies to all Mac users.
Many users were able to use Facemaker on Mac by using a VM or Parallels. Everything works, you just have to go through the hassle of installing a Windows or Linux VM.

Important: there have been reports of bricked Huawei GT1 watches when importing HWT with more than 25 widgets!
Facemaker will issue a warning when you reach the 25 widgets limit, but you may proceed adding more at your own risk!
On the official Huawei watch face designer manual, it also says: "The maximum number of controls on one watch face is 25." You have been warned!

I personally own a Huawei GT1 46mm, Huawei GT2e and a Huawei GT4, so I can test all features on these before every release.
I can't really test on the other watches but it should work... theoretically.
The difference between these watches is the resolution, most features are inter-compatible despite of the resolution differences.
Huawei GT2 and Honor MW2 (and later watches) support the new Enhanced and Smart build modes, which allows a special kind of widgets called Containers and Custom widgets (among other features).
This software only creates the watchface, you have to import it into your watch using whatever method available.
There are several ways to do it, I'll describe the one I'm using on the topic "Upload to the watch".
Also search Youtube or Google, you'll find dozens of videos explaining how to accomplish it.

There are versions available for these operating systems:

• Windows (7/8/10/11)
• Linux (any recent distro should work)

I'm unable to test this on Mac, since I don't own one.
I have feedback from many users using the Windows version on a VM/Parallels and according to them, it works perfectly. For Linux, you have to previously install Wine and wine executable path should be on the PATH environment variables.
Wine does this for you, so if from a command line/terminal you type 'wine' and the command is recognized, you should be good to go.
Wine is necessary because the packagers (the binaries that create the watchface) are Win32 executables.
I won't go into detail on how to install Wine on a linux distro. If you're using linux, you should know how to do it with a couple of terminal commands, otherwise, google it or ultimately, go back to Windows!
You may also find installation instructions for both OS on my repository.

Most likely, I'm already working on it.
As soon as a new watch is released, as I can't buy them all, I must find a beta tester to be sure Facemaker works with such watch.
So, it takes some time to create support for a watch. If your watch isn't supported and you'd like to beta test Facemaker, please contact me.

Facemaker interface was developed to be as simple as possible, considering on how complex a watchface can be.
It was designed by Marko Söörnurm.
Here is the breakdown of it's areas and what they do:

1. Main menu
   This is the main menu of Facemaker. This is where you open and save files, close Facemaker, all functionalities are self explanatory and change according to the context.
   For example, depending on if you are in Enhanced or Normal build mode, 46 or 42mm watches, the options will be different, especially on the Edit menu.
   Explore and get used to the options you have available.
   
   
2. Widgets menu
   This is where you click to add widgets to your watch face.
   Depending on if you are in Enhanced or Normal build mode, these options will change.
   
   
3. Export and build mode selection buttons
   The export button allows you to export your watchface.
   The build mode selection button is only visible if you have GT2 watch or above and enables you to select between Normal build mode and Enhanced mode. More about these modes later on this Manual.
   
   
4. Widgets (layers)
   All widgets added to the watch face will feature here and this is where you select them.
   Depending on the build mode, you can change your widgets order (if they display in front or back), by drag and dropping. You can also make them invisible, lock them, clone them (not all widgets are clonable) and delete them.
   
   
5. Watch face canvas
   This is where the physical representation of your widgets will be.
   Here, you can move, scale and rotate your widgets (with your mouse and combining the Ctrl key, read "Working with widgets" to know more). It is a representation of your watch's screen.
   
   
6. Widget properties
   Whenever you select a widget, it's properties will show here.
   This form allows you to fine tune certain aspects of a widget, and above all, define the widget data type (what kind of data it'll display, if applicable).
   
   

Facemaker features a gradient tool that allows you to create fill gradients, so you're not limited to only fill color:

1. Change gradient type
   Just click the highlighted field number 1 on the above image. You can choose between linear, circular or conic gradient.
   
   
2. Change gradient direction
   Just click the highlighted field number 2 on the above image.
   Linear gradients allow you to select a direction.
   With circular gradients, you select an origin point.
   Conic gradients always generate around a 360 degrees angle and you can only add/remove dots.
   
   
3. Add dots (stops)
   Just click anywhere on the field number 3 on the above image. You can then move it and select the color.
   

   
   
   
4. Remove dots (stops)
   To remove a dot, grab the dot and without releasing, pull it down. The dot will be removed.

   
   
   

• Saving gradients
  Click the "+" button on the highlighted field number 4.
  The gradient will be saved and you can use it later in other designs.
  
  
• Deleting saved gradients
  Right-click a saved gradient and select "Remove gradient".
  
  
• Make a solid color
  Simple, just use two control points with the same color.
  
  

HFM is the save file format of Facemaker.
Think of it like PSD for Photoshop. In this format, all information about your watch face is saved, without losing image quality, animations, image effects and so on.

You should always save a backup of your project in HFM format.
You can do this by pressing File and Save as... in the Facemaker main menu.

To easily have Facemaker naming the file, before you save, go into the File->Face Info and name your watch face. Afterwards, when you press File->Save as, the filename will be named after the name of your watch face, the one you used in the Face Info.

So, remember: ALWAYS SAVE YOUR PROJECT IN HFM FORMAT.
Simply exporting your watch face doesn't mean you're saving the project!

Also, do not save the HFM in the same folder where you export the watch face.
Facemaker deletes the output folder contents before exporting (in order to be able to replace the watch face), so, create a specific folder to save your HFMs. I use "c:\HFM".

HWT is the watch face itself.
It is created when you press "EXPORT" on the Facemaker top right corner of the UI.
After it is created, you can import it into the watch following the "Upload to the watch" topic on this Manual.

You should never save your projects solely as HWT, because the HWT file is a binary file, optimized to work on the watch only. Images are compressed and lose quality and all image effects, animations and settings are lost.
So remember, USE THIS FORMAT FOR THE WATCH ONLY.

Yes you do. I know Facemaker doesn't have an extensive number of preferences, but you should take a look at them when you first start the software.
It is where you set Facemaker preferences. It's still pretty basic but soon many more options will be added.

Keep in mind that not all options may be described on this Manual, because I'm constantly adding new ones.

• Default author
  Filling this field will auto fill the "Author" field on Face Info, so you don't have to do it everytime.
• Default designer
  Filling this field will auto fill the "Designer" field on Face Info, so you don't have to do it everytime.
• Default watch model
  Filling this field will auto fill the "Watch Model" field on Face Info, so you don't have to do it everytime.
  Next time you start Facemaker this will be the pre-selected watch model.
• Default theme directory
  This is the folder to which your watchfaces will be exported by default.
  If you set it here, it'll be used by default on every new watchface.
• Graphics editor executable
  This enables you to edit any image on your favourite graphics editor.
  Just select the path to the application executable. A new button will show next to the widget's image preview, and by clicking it, the image is opened on your graphics editor. After you edit your image, overwrite it and it'll update automatically inside Facemaker.
• Auto save
  Auto save to HFM. Facemaker is pretty stable and you shouldn't need to set this, but just in case 😉
• Every x minutes
  Auto save every x minutes. Sets the interval after which the HFM will be saved.
• Max undos
  Undos use physical memory space, or RAM. If your PC doesn't have much memory, you can tweek how many undo steps you want.
• Rotation step
  Number of degrees you want a widget to rotate when you rotate it "manually". You may still fine tune a widget rotation on it's properties.
• Auto rename containers
  Very useful option, my advice is, enable this feature.
  When you select a container's data type, the container will be automatically renamed. FOr example, if the data type is "Steps", the container will be renamed to "StepsContainer".

• Language
  English is not your forte? Don't worry, we've got 15 more languages. If Facemaker doesn't speak your language and you want to contribute, contact me 😉
• Theme
  Facemaker has two themes, "dark" and "light". Choose wisely!
• Highlight moving widget
  Enable this option in order to darken all the other widgets when moving a widget.
  Effectively, the selected widget will look highlighted.
• Widget outline colors
  Choose the colors for the widget outline.
  First color for when the widget isn't selected, second color for when it's selected.
• Grid color
  Choose the color used by the Grid.
• Guidelines color
  Choose the color used by the Guidelines.
• Snaplines color
  Choose the color used by the Snap lines.
• Show mouse coordinates
  Enabling this option shows the current X/Y mouse coordinates on the bottom left corner of the central section of the interface.
• Show shortcuts
  Enabling this option shows the keyboard shortcuts for those most used tasks when working with widgets.
• Show transform helpers
  This option enables the transform information on the widgets themselves. You can also check this information on the widget properties panel.
• Zoom factor
  This option changes the zoom factor on the interface. Especially useful if your screen resolution is low and you still want to be able to work with Facemaker.
  You can also use this feature if your screen resolution is too high (4K for example), and you want to make the interface larger.

• Random values
  Enable this option to show random values when you press the Preview button.
• Show layer boundaries
  Enable or disable the layer boundaries visibility when in Preview mode.
  Widgets have a dashed line around them, you can enable or disable it when previewing by using this option.
• Snapshot mode
  Facemaker has implemented a "New" snapshot mode recently, but some users have had problems with it, especially those running Windows 7.
  If you face such problems (not being able to take snapshots), revert to the "Old" mode.
  
• Values on preview images
  These are the default values used on Preview mode, if Random Values option is disabled.
  For static Snapshots, these values are always used.

• PNG Quant
  This is a method of compressing PNG images, or rather, making them smaller.
  It doesn't work well with some images and some get corrupted, so try it and if you get corrupted images, disable it and export the watchface again.
  The packagers are not Facemaker responsability, and they're picky on the image color profile and compression.
  Quantization works by compressing a PNG between a minimum and maximum quality values (from 0 to 100%), those two options are described on the next two items.
• Minimum quality
  This is the minimum quality for PNG Quantization. The compression algorithm won't try to reduce the image quality below this value.
  Setting a very low value here will most certainly give you corrupted images, so be cautious and decrease this value by small increments.
• Maximum quality
  This is the maximum quality for PNG Quantization. Maximum PNG's quality will be limited to this value.
• JPEG Quality
  All images are PNG except for two which are used for the Huawei watchface preview. These JPEG images may also be compressed to make the watchface smaller.
  If you don't care about the preview quality, set this value to a low number like 20 or 30. It won't impact the image quality of the watchface itself and it'll make your watchface smaller.

• Fonts
  Facemaker allows you to use custom fonts on Image Sets, Icon Sets, Image Combos and Artistic Text widgets. These can't be used on Text Simple/Concatenated widgets!
  This is where you import your custom fonts. In order to be available, they must be imported before you create the widgets.
  Some fonts are badly designed and have a strange line height. Some may appear cutoff, on the top or on the bottom. If that happens, use a different font, work with the spacing option or design your Image Sets on an external program like Photoshop or GIMP.

• Default Huawei packager
  Here you have two options, the official Huawei packager and the under development, still experimental Facemaker packager.
  Facemaker will eventually drop the Huawei packager all together.
• Default Amazfit packager
  This option is for Amazfit watch faces only, so feel free to ignore it.
• Append model name
  Enable this to append the watch model name to the exported watch face name!
  The exported watch face name will look like this: 'AwesomeWatchface_gt3.hwt'. You may combine this option with 'Append version'.
• Append version
  Enable this to append the watch face version to the exported watch face name!
  The exported watch face name will look like this: 'AwesomeWatchface_v1.1.hwt'. You may combine this option with 'Append model name'.
• Lock HWT
  Enable this to lock your HWTs. Users will be unable to open the HWT and edit your watchface.
  Attention: HWT's may still be extractable by editing the HEX code. Set a password on the Password field!
• Password
  The password to be used to lock the HWT.
• Export hidden widgets
  This option is not being used yet, so feel free to ignore it.
• Generate preview image
  Most watch brands use a preview image for their watch faces.
  Facemaker generates this image for you, but only if you enable this feature.
  If you don't have this feature enabled, the preview image will only be generated if:
  • You didn't import one already.
  • It's the first time you're exporting your watch face.
  After that, if you don't have this feature enabled, Facemaker won't overwrite the preview image.
  
  So, the rule is simple:
  If you want Facemaker to always generate the preview image, enable this feature. If you want to use your own image, disable this feature, but keep in mind you should upload a new image to reflect any changes you made to the watch face.
• Uglify Javascript
  This option is for Amazfit watch faces only, so feel free to ignore it.

If you're not really into design and can't use a graphics application to save your life, use the Library, available since v0.7b.
Facemaker now enables you to combine hundreds of embedded graphics, and even customize them, by changing their color, brightness, contrast, rotate them, resize them and combining them to your heart's desire.
I'm more of a programmer, but I also like arts, so I took a shot at it. I hope you find them useful!
I'll be adding more and removing others on future versions.
For now, you have 13 categories of images on the Library:

• Automotive
• Backgrounds
• Cartoon
• Circles
• Dials
• Elements
• Flags
• Hands
• Imagesets
• Lines
• Logos
• Misc
• Overlays
• Stencils

They're pretty self-explanatory, but explore them and let me know if you want a specific one. When you import images on any widget, you can also save to the library, especially if it's one of those images you know you'll be using a lot!


To save an image on the library, press the "Save to library" button, choose a name and a category and save!
Your image will be added to the library and will be available on the category you chose.
When you no longer want the image, you can delete it from the library, since custom images have an extra button which allows you to delete them.
You can create your own category, but keep in mind that YOU SHOULD create specific categories for Image Sets (collections of images, like animations, or Image Combos images).

In order to achieve a good working watch face, you must follow certain rules.
No cutting corners. I receive hundreds of emails from people doing the same mistakes, again and again, despite having these warnings here on the manual.
From now on, I'll stop responding to such queries, the info is here and people have to read it.
Stop doing the following:

You can generate all graphics for your watch face in Facemaker.
But my advice is, you should design your watch in your favorite graphics application, to achieve more complex watch faces.
Use Gimp, Photoshop, whatever fancies you.
I usually create an image with 960x960px, because that's the biggest size you're ever going to need.
Once you design your watch, create a copy for your final watchface size, depending on the model. Then export the layers in PNG format (no compression, full RGB).
Depending on your design, you'll need a background image and hands for hours, minutes and seconds.
Keep in mind you should always crop your images to use the least space possible. The watch has to process every pixel even if it's transparent (full alpha).
Not cropping the images will only make your watchface sluggish and unnecessarily large... many users contact me complaining about this.
No wonder! Every single image they're using had 454x454, so imagine how the watch struggles to render every image with full size...
Facemaker features an image generator for digital clock numbers (and all Image Set/Icon Set/Image Combo/Artistic Text widget data types), so you don't need those (although you can create your own).
For now, you can use all the available fonts and some more I added. You're also able to import your own font on Edit->Preferences!
Just keep in mind that, you can't use custom fonts on Huawei's Text Simple and Concatenated widgets, those use the watch firmware fonts and no, I can't change that.
If you're a newbie, start with a simple face with fewer graphics. Once you're more experienced, try more complex designs.
Save all the images on a folder and name them accordingly (background.png, hour_hand.png, etc).

The boring part is done!
Now comes the fun.
Fire up Facemaker and click File->Face info.
First, you should select your watch model. You can skip this part if you previously selected the "Default watch model" on Preferences, because your watch model will already be selected.
Then, give your watch face a name and a version (use integer numbers, like 1, 2, 3).
Select your destination folder (the place where Facemaker will export the watch face).
You can skip this part if you previously selected the "Default theme directory" on Preferences, because it will already be selected.
Press "Submit" and you're ready to start Facemaking!

For simplicity sake, we'll use Normal build mode.
Press the "Image" button on the main bar and you should see a widget placeholder on the watch canvas.
On the widget properties, you have two possibilities to load images. You can use one from the library or you can load your own.
Once you select the image, you'll see it on the canvas, ready to be moved, scaled or rotated! Refer to Working with widgets to learn how to scale and rotate.
Simple as that.

Before you start designing your watchface, begin by filling the Face info dialog. Click File->Face Info (or Ctrl+Shift+F) and fill all the fields:

• Model
  The watch model.
  This should be the first setting you change, since all calculations will consider the size of the display; once you add widgets, this setting will become readonly and you won't be able to change it unless you delete all widgets or start a new watchface.
• Name
  The name of your theme.
  This will also be used to create the folder with all generated files, including the watchface file. This title mustn't have whitespaces or underscores. Use solely alphanumeric characters!
• Chinese Name
  The name of your theme in chinese.
  This is necessary to make the face compatible with Huawei's Face Market. Give it the english name if you're not chinese.
• Author
  You. Yes, you!
• Designer
  Whoever created the design.
• Screen
  This setting is readonly and changes according to the watch model.
• Version
  This setting has two fields.
  The first field corresponds to the second digit on the watchface version (x.1.x) and it varies depending on the widgets and data types you use. You may edit it, but keep in mind that some widgets might not work if you change it. Facemaker automatically calculates this for you, so leave it alone of you don't know what this is for.
  The second field, this you must edit. It corresponds to the third digit on the watchface version (x.x.1 for example).
• Font
  I never really understood this setting, but it's needed for one of the xml's. Leave it as 'Default'.
• Chinese Font
  This is necessary to make the face compatible with Huawei's face market. Leave it as 'Default'.
• Export time
  This is also necessary to make the face compatible with Huawei's face market. Huawei demands it to be 10:08:36... it must have some special meaning as everything chinese, so you should respect it :)
• Theme directory
  This is the folder where the theme will be created. If you don't have one, create it first and call it 'custom_themes' or something. Once you build your theme, a folder will be created under this directory, with the name you defined on the 'Title' field.
  This will be pre-filled by the "Default Theme directory", if you selected one already on the Preferences.
• Description
  If you post your theme on the Huawei face market, this will be the text that describes your theme.
  You can add descriptions in up to 28 different languages.
  Make sure you don't use strange characters like '&' or '\', only alphanumerics characters and punctuation should be used.
• Cover
  If you post your theme on the Huawei face market, this will be the image on the description and is also used as Preview images (the cover.jpg and icon_small.jpg images inside the preview folder)
  and it should be 960x960px in JPG format (remember why I mentioned creating your images in 960x960? This is why).
  This image is optional, since Facemaker creates one for you, but the generated image will have less quality,
  because it's being upscaled from the watch face size, which can be as small as 360x360.
  It is recommended you create your own.
  
  Also remember: if you're letting Facemaker generate this image, each time you change your watch face,
  you should go into the Face Info, and press "DELETE" before you export the watch face.
  This way, Facemaker will generate a new updated image.

Press 'Submit' and you should be ready to start building your watch face!

Huawei's Normal build mode is the simplest of them all.
All you need to do is add widgets, order them the way you like, add them data types and that's it.
This mode is supported by all Huawei/Honor watches, but it's exclusive for GT1 and Honor MW (there's no Enhanced mode for these watches).
There's also no specific layer order, which allows for more freedom when building a watch face, but there are some setbacks.
First, you can't have two widgets using the same data type. For example, you can't have two rotaries for Hours.
Second, you don't have the concept of containers, which Enhanced and Smart modes have. Containers allow you to include several interchangeable widgets (also called Custom widgets or Options), which are selectable on the watch. They also serve as shortcuts, depending on the data type they have.

From GT3/Watch 3, this mode is no longer available!

YOU CAN'T CHANGE FROM NORMAL MODE INTO ENHANCED/SMART MODE OR VICE-VERSA WHEN YOU ALREADY HAVE WIDGETS. THE STRUCTURE OF THESE THREE MODES IS TOO DIFFERENT.
TO START IN NORMAL MODE, REMOVE ALL WIDGETS OR PRESS FILE->NEW ON THE MAIN MENU AND THEN CHANGE THE BUILD MODE.

If you're a newbie, you should start by using this mode (if available), since Enhanced/Smart modes have a more complex structure and can get quite messy sometimes.

Huawei's Enhanced build mode is the advanced mode.
It introduces the concept of Containers, which inturn allows you to encapsulate Custom widgets.
These Custom widgets become options, when you install the watchface. For example, you can add several Custom widgets to a Container and then select the one you wish to show on the watch.
It also has some more advanced and fancy widgets, like Random Background, which displays a different image everytime you turn your wrist or click the screen. More on this widget later.
Enhanced mode also has animations, you will find them on the Background container, the widget's called Animation.

YOU CAN'T CHANGE FROM ENHANCED MODE INTO NORMAL MODE OR VICE-VERSA WHEN YOU ALREADY HAVE WIDGETS. THE STRUCTURE OF THESE TWO MODES IS TOO DIFFERENT.
TO START IN ENHANCED MODE, REMOVE ALL WIDGETS OR PRESS FILE->NEW ON THE MAIN MENU AND THEN CHANGE THE BUILD MODE.

If you're a newbie, you should avoid playing with this mode, since it has a more difficult concept.

Huawei's Smart build mode is similar to Enhanced mode with one major difference:

Containers and Custom widgets may or may not have a data type.

This means you can mix widgets of all data types inside a data-less Container.
This allows, for example, to build an entire watchface inside a Custom widget, then have it be selectable by associating it with a Container.
So effectively, you could have several watchfaces inside one if you wanted to.

Ask around on our Discord support server if you have doubts concerning this build mode.

To move widgets, you simply select and move them. That's it.

Now, there are various ways to move widgets when a widget is selected:

• You can simply click and drag them on the canvas, using your mouse (make sure you lock the other widgets, so they don't get in the way).
• You can use the input fields on the right, clicking up or down on the X and Y fields.
• You can use your arrow keys (up, down, left and right) as long as none of the other input fields has focus and you have the Properties tab selected.
• You can Shift select (keep the Shift key pressed, mouse-click the widgets you want on the watch canvas or on the widgets list, then release the Shift key) and then use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move several widgets at the same time.
  Containers are not Shift selectable.

Pressing shift while moving with the arrow keys moves the widget 10px at a time.

After selecting a widget, there are two ways to resize it:

• You can use the input fields on the right, clicking up or down on the width and height fields.
• You can hover the widget, press and hold Ctrl key and the transform icons will appear. Click one of the resize icons (or one of the edges) and move the mouse.

Enable or disable the aspect ratio (next to the width/height fields) in order to resize width and height proportionally.

After selecting a widget, there are two ways to rotate it:

• You can use the input fields on the right, clicking up or down on the rotation field (R).
• You can hover the widget, press and hold Ctrl key and the transform icons will appear. Click the rotation icon and move the mouse.

Not all widgets are rotatable, these are: Line, Text (simple) and Text (concatenated). Image Combos have a specific type of rotation (each image rotates independently, used together with the offset property).

You can use this handy feature to easily copy images from one widget into another.

There are two ways of doing it:

• Put your mouse over the image preview field of the origin widget and press Ctrl+C.
  
  
  
  Put your mouse over the image preview field of the destination widget and press Ctrl+V.
  
  
  
  
• Instead of copying a single image, you can use the following method to copy all images.
  Next to the image preview field, press the Copy button and select the origin widget.
  
  
  
  

This feature is very useful.
For example, you can copy the image of a Circle widget, to use it as the placeholder, by placing it behind and giving it a darker color using image effects!

Also, using the first method, you can equally just paste any image you copy, for example, from the internet or from your favourite image editor, like Photoshop!

You can preview widgets simply by pressing the Preview button (button with a Play icon, right above the watch canvas).
But there are situations where you only need to preview one widget, in order to see how it'll show in it's different states.

To preview just one widget, you must first select it. Then, maintain the Shift key pressed and scroll your mouse wheel.
Different kinds of widgets will preview differently, so experiment!

Data categories are the type of information you can show on the watch. They may also be classified by "Enumerate", "Ratio" and "Integer". This is important, especially for Normal mode build, you'll see why very soon.
Just keep in mind that, for example, Steps data type in a Text widget is different of Steps data type on a Circle widget.
That's because Steps on a Circle is a percentage (or Ratio), while Steps on a Text widget is an Integer (or Number). This is important because in Normal build mode, you can't have two widgets with the same data type/category.
But on Normal mode, you can have Steps on a Circle and on a Text widget at the same time, because they're fundamentally different. They're both about Steps, but they have a different category.

So remember, in Normal build mode, you can't have two Rotaries for Seconds/Minutes/Hours. Nor can you have a Circle and a Rotary with Seconds, because they use the same category of data: Ratio. Here's what each widget type uses:

• Ratio: Circle, Line, Rotary
• Enumerate: Image Set, Image Combo
• Integer: Text (simple), Text (concatenated)

Data types are a property of a widget and define the kind of information they show.

As previously explained. Normal build mode is simpler, so you have no containers, just widgets.
This is the list of widgets available in Normal mode:

Enhanced build mode introduces the concept of containers.
Containers are like drawers where you put widgets or Custom widgets. If the Container uses several Custom widgets, it can only display one at a time.
These are the kind of containers available:

This feature is amazing and will save you a lot of time!

It allows you to open any image from a widget, directly on your external graphics editor, like GIMP or Photoshop.
When you're done with the editing, just overwrite the file (save it) and the image will be updated automatically on Facemaker.

To use it, first you have to set your External graphics editor path on the Preferences->General. Once you have the path set, everytime you load an image on a widget, you'll also have this button available:


Press it and select "Edit file on external editor" and the image will be opened on your external graphics editor (like GIMP or Photoshop).


Edit the image and when you're done, overwrite it.


The image will be updated automatically on Facemaker.



This functionality saves you the hassle of having to export the image, open it on your external editor, save it and re-importing it onto Facemaker.

Lately I've been visiting a lot of blogs, forums and even dedicated sites for Huawei watch faces.
Most of them are using this software to create the faces they're sharing, which frankly makes me proud and more eager to improve it.

So, for those who like to share a snapshot of the face they've just created, all they have to do is press the "Snapshot" button, the button with the camera icon, right above the watch canvas.
A dialog will open with the options described in the next topics.

Keep in mind that only visible widgets are rendered in the snapshot, so make the widgets visible before you start this process.

Allows you to include the watch frame of the specific watch you're targeting.
This way, the final image will include not only the watch face, but also the watch frame.

Allows you to include a simulated glass glare above the watch face.

Besides exporting a static image, you can also export an animation.
This allows you to effectively render a simulation of the watch working.

Options for Animation are:

• Format (GIF, APNG, WEBP or MP4)
• Duration (in seconds)
• Background color (applicable for GIF and MP4 only)

The APNG, WEBP and MP4 formats offer the best quality, with smaller filesizes.
The GIF format offers the best compatibility, but the filesize will be much larger than the other formats.

Take into consideration that animations render a lot of images.
This may produce a large file (especially with animated GIF), so avoid rendering more than 10 seconds.
If you choose MP4, since Facemaker uses the well known h264 codec, you can render much longer videos and the end result will still be small.
Usually 5 seconds is enough to show off your creation!

This is what you can expect after you export 2 seconds of animation MP4 video.
Now, go and share it with your friends!

Before you press the 'Export' button, make sure all fields in the Face Info dialog are filled, especially the 'Theme directory' field and the watchface name on the 'Name (EN)*' field.
After you make changes on this dialog, make sure to save your project.

Facemaker will save all files in a folder with the name of your theme.

For example, let's say your export path (Theme directory) is set to c:\watchfaces.
The name of your watchface is "AwesomeWatchFace".
The exported watch face will reside on c:\watchfaces\AwesomeWatchFace.

To export the watch face:

• Press the Export button, located on the top-right corner of the UI.
• The process may take a few seconds, so reply to the given prompts and wait.
• A final message should appear stating that the watch face file was created.
• Close the message and the theme directory should open.
  If it doesn't, navigate to the folder manually.

You should see a folder named after your theme's title, open it.
The HWT should be inside it, among all the other files used by the packager.

All you need now is to upload the HWT file to your watch, read the next topic to learn one of the methods available.

So now you've built the most incredible watch face and you want to test it on your watch, right?
I know the feeling.

There are 2 available methods:

• Gadgetbridge
• Modified Health app

They both work, but I highly recommend you use the Gadgetbridge method.
I personaly tested them on my OnePlus phone running Android 13.
The modified Health app method won't work on Huawei phones, because the Health and Huawei Mobile Services (HMS Core) are system apps. If your phone is Huawei, use the Gadgetbridge method.

IMPORTANT:
For the Gadgetbridge to work correctly, without resetting the watch when you pair it with the official Huawei Health app, you must find out what your Huawei ID is.
The process is well described in the "Gadgetbridge" topic, so please read it all.
You must also have paired with the Health app at least once before you attempt to configure Gadgetbridge.

Keep in mind that if you don't find out your Huawei ID, switching between Gadgetbridge and the Health app resets your watch.
Follow all the instructions in order to avoid it and have the best of both worlds.

• Download the "Gadgetbridge" app from here (choose the "Gadgetbridge (Nightly)" version):
  Gadgetbridge Repository
• Install the APK on your phone;
• Now, let's find out your Huawei ID!
  Do the following on any PC Chrome based browser (Edge, Chrome, Brave):
• Go to https://cloud.huawei.com/ and log in using your Huawei account credentials.
  This should be the same email/phone and password you use to login to the Health app.
• Press the F12 key on your keyboard and the developer tools will open (some laptops require Fn + F12)
  
  
  
  
• Go to the Application tab in the newly opened view
  
  
  
  
• To the left under Storage, click the little downward arrow next to Cookies and open the cookie named "https://cloud.huawei.com/"
  
  
  
  
• In the Name column, look for "userId" (you may need to scroll down).
  In the Value column, you should see a 17 digit number
  
  
  
  
• Take note of this number somewhere and keep it safe;
• Now you're ready to use the Gadgetbridge app to install watchfaces!
  Start the Gadgetbridge application;
• Follow this video to learn how to insert the Huawei ID you copied earlier on the Gadgetbridge app:
  
  
  
  
• Now we can install custom watchfaces and keep them, when we switch to the Health app!
• On the Gadgetbridge "Devices" screen, press the "+" button.
  
  
  
  The app should search and find your watch;
• Pair the watch with the app. The watch will be added to the list of devices;
• In this list, in your specific device, press the 3 dots button and select "Connect";
  
  
  
  
• To install watchfaces, press the button with the squares;
  
  
  
  
• All the apps and watchfaces should appear listed.
  Press the upload button on the bottom right corner and select the watchface you previously uploaded to the device;
  
  
  
  
• All done! The watchface should be installed!

Keep in mind that, you can't be paired to the official Huawei Health app and Gadgetbridge at the same time.
Disconnect from the Health app and connect with the Gadgetbridge app when you want to install watchfaces.
Disconnect from the Gadgetbridge app and connect with the Health app for normal everyday use.

If you followed the "Huawei ID" instructions above, the watch should keep all custom watchfaces in the process 😉

1. First, make sure you don't have HMS Core installed (Huawei Mobile Services);
2. Download the modified Health app from the Facemaker repository (into your phone) and install it.
   If you don't know how to install 3rd party apps on Android, follow this guide: How to install third-party apps without the Google Play Store;
3. Start the modded Health app;
4. Make sure all needed permissions are given on Android, except the possibility for the app to auto-update itself;
5. Use your normal credentials (no need for a chinese ID like before).
   If you are using two devices (one to install watchfaces and another as daily driver), make sure you use the same Huawei credentials on both;
6. Pair your watch with your device;
7. Enter the Watchface Store by pressing "More";
8. Press "Mine" (located on top);
9. Click this button:
   
   
   
   
10. Select the watchface you previously uploaded to the device (make sure you don't select your watchface from a folder called "download", create a specific folder and copy your watchfaces there first);
11. Sometimes the watchface installation fails. When this happens, repeat the process and eventually, the watchface will install;
12. IMPORTANT: never let the modded Health app update itself.
    It'll ask you repeatedly to do it, always answer "No" or "Later".

Short answer: Yes!
Long answer: It depends.

The extractor is still under development and may or may not be able to extract all images and/or widgets.
So, use it at your own risk and report back.
The binary was developed by Raul Moraleda and he's working hard to develop it even further, to a point where Facemaker won't even need Huawei packager to even export a watchface.

Also, if the HWT is locked (Facemaker allows it's users to lock the HWT, preventing it's extraction), you won't be able to extract it without the password.

• Press File->Open HWT;
• Select the HWT file;
• Wait for Facemaker to fully import all the images and widgets;
• If the watchface isn't blocked, you should have the watchface ready for editing on Facemaker;
• If not, at least you tried.

The Physics tool allows you to use your widgets as physics objects and simulate whatever you want with them.
For example, you can define some widgets as free falling and other as static objects. They will then fall and interact with each other.


You can achieve the result in the previous image by recording the numbers falling and then using those captured frames as an Animation.

No watch brand has a calendar widget, at least, as far as I know.
But this is possible to fake, by using a simple image trick. This is what this tool does.
It creates the necessary images and widgets to achieve the look of a calendar.


Keep in mind that this displays the month day ONLY. For other data types like Week Day, you must add them yourself.

Facemaker allows you to draw shapes using a vector drawing tool.
A vector, in the Facemaker context, is simply a way to define a point and direction in 2D space.
This definition allows us to store a collection of points (start and end points), that when connected, define a curve.
Vectors also have control points, which define the curvature and direction of the curve.
Control points allow you to define a sharp or soft curve, both demonstrated by "11" and "12" in the following pictures.

You can create vector designs by adding an Image Widget and then pressing the "Paintbrush" icon (on the widget properties form) and selecting "Draw Vector":



A toolbar will appear and you can start drawing straight away!
Take a look at the vector design toolbar:

1. Snap: this will merge control points when you bring points close together. This is especially useful when you want to design closed curves;
2. Cap: format of the line cap (round or square). This has also an impact on the look of point connections, they'll look more sharp or round depending on this setting;
3. Fill: fill the shape with color. Depending on wether the shape is closed or not, this will fill the shape with the color you select on "Fill color";
4. Width: Line width;
5. Line color: Self explanatory. A design can only have one line color. If you want to create different color lines, you need to design them in separate.
6. Fill color: Self explanatory. A design can only have one fill color. If you want to create different filled lines, you need to design them in separate.
7. Show/hide control points: This will allow you to see the shape better, without the control points getting in the way;
8. Reset: Delete all control points and curves and start over;
9. Save: Saves your work and creates an image from it. All control points are saved with the widget and you can edit it later if you want.

Procedure

To start drawing, simply click the watch canvas and Facemaker will add a point. When you click again, Facemaker will connect the first point and the second, to form a line.



To move control points (in the picture, those connected by dashed lines), simply click them, drag and release. This will change the curvature of the line:



Pressing the Shift key, allows you to add independent points, to create separate lines, as seen on "10".

To delete a point, hover it with the mouse, press the Alt key and the cursor will change to a "not allowed" icon. Click and the control point will be removed.
To move a point, simply click it, drag and release.
You can switch the direction in wich you draw, by first clicking the first or the last control points.
When you're happy with the shape, just save it and it'll be added to the widget. You can then apply image effects, border, shadow and a multitude of other image effects.
You can see an example of a watch face exclusively designed in Facemaker, using the vector tool and the image effects:

Image FX are effects that you can apply to any widget.
Think of them like non-destructive modifiers. The original image remains saved, while you apply image effects and modify it, either by changing it's color, applying a gradient, a pattern and so on.

You can in fact build an entire watch face from nothing, using shapes and image effects. This is why this feature is so important and you should learn it and experiment with it.
Keep in mind that you should always have a final image before you start adding effects, because there are some that change the width and height of the widget, like the Shadow, Border or Array effects. This can lead to unexpected results.
Read along to understand what image effects can do for you and your watch faces.

An array effect simply duplicates the image of the widget by n times. This particular array effect rotates the image and duplicates it around it's absolute center.
So, say you have an image that's 100x100px. It'll rotate around the 50x50px location and duplicate the image around.
Here's a visual representation of what it does:


If you want to make the image rotate like in the example, you must first make the image the same size as the canvas, using the "Crop to canvas" function.

An array effect simply duplicates the image of the widget by n times. This particular array effect scales the image and duplicates it outward or inward it's absolute center.
So, say you have an image that's 100x100px. It'll scale the image by n positive/negative pixels and duplicate it n times.
Here's a visual representation of what it does:

An array effect simply duplicates the image of the widget by n times. This particular array effect moves the image on the X and/or the Y axis and duplicates it n times.
So, say you have an image of any size. It'll move the image by n pixels (vertically and/or horizontally) and duplicate it n times.
Here's a visual representation of what it does:

A bevel effect adds a 3d effect to an image, by simulating highlight and shadow at opposite angles.
To be realistic, a highlight should be on the opposite side of the shadow. Think of how light works in the real life.
Light is cast from a source and on one side, the object that receives it is lighter, while on the farthest side, is darker. Pretty much what happens to planet Earth while it receives light from the Sun.
Day on one side, night on the other.
Here's a visual representation of what it does:



This effect has a few settings:

• Amount: the strength of the effect.
• Shadow Color: the color of the shadow. Being able to control this color allows you to achieve interesting effects.
• Shadow Operation: The composite operation used for the shadow. You should use "Multiply" in 99% of the cases, the others are there for pure experimentation.
• Shadow X and Y coordinates: The location of the shadow. Experiment to understand what they do, but the initial values should give you a head start!
• Highlight Color: the color of the highlight. Being able to control this color allows you to achieve interesting effects.
• Highlight Operation: The composite operation used for the highlight. You should use "Lighter" in 99% of the cases, the others are there for pure experimentation.
• Highlight X and Y coordinates: The location of the highlight. Experiment to understand what they do, but the initial values should give you a head start!
• Blur: Blur value of both the shadow and highlight. Changing this value will make them softer or sharper.

The simple blur effect applies a blur effect to the image.
This effect has a fundamental difference from the Gaussian blur (also available):
It doesn't affect transparent pixels!
Here's a visual representation of what it does:



In this example, a duplicate non blurred image cut to half was put on top, to illustrate how this effect works.
The blur effect is limited to the bounds of the image. This is useful for many situations.

If you'd prefer a blur effect that affects every pixel, even transparent ones, use Gaussian Blur instead.

The border effect does exactly what it says.
It adds a border around the contour of the image.
Here's a visual representation of what it does:



Instead of a simple color, you can use a gradient for a border. This is useful to simulate several effects.
You have 2 modes available, experiment with them and use the one that gives you better results.

The brightness effect simply makes the image brighter or darker.
Here's a visual representation of what it does:

The channels effect allows you to tweak the color channels of an image.
Colors are composed of 3 channels (red, green and blue in the RGB system).
By tweaking each channel separately, you can adjust the overall color of an image.
If you want to emphasize the red color, increase the red channel. The same applies to the other colors
Here's a visual representation of what it does:

The circles effect creates concentric circles.
The result will be a complete substitution of the original image.
This is very useful to achieve some effects that are usually present in many watch faces, like the background of complication elements.

This or the "Spiral" effect eill give you very interesting results and allow you to create the right look for your complication, coupled with a background circle.

The clip effect simplifies the color information of an image.
It'll reduce the number of colors, using the most predominant ones.

I haven't found a usefulness for this effect yet, but it's there, in case you need it.

The color replace effect replaces one color with another.
Pick the color you want to replace and then select the color you want to replace it with.
You have a threshold setting, useful when you have several shades of the color you want to replace.
Here's a visual representation of what it does:

The color to alpha effect replaces one color with transparency.
Pick the color you want to replace and increase the threshold setting, to make it transparent.
You also have an Intensity setting, that tweaks the opacity, making it more or less opaque.
Here's a visual representation of what it does:

This is available on Edit->Convert to...
It allows you to convert projects from one watch to another.
Because of differences on fonts between 47, 42mm, Watch series and the GT series, you have to inspect all Text widgets after conversion and set an appropriate font.

You can, but the result will be subpar!
While the functionality is available, the end result is usually of poor quality.
For this to work, images have to be resized (increased in size). Increasing an image size does not keep the quality, because you can not create detail where it doesn't exist in the first place.
So, such resized images will result in less than stellar end results, with slightly blurred images.

This may be noticeable or maybe it won't.
You can do it, but I don't recommend it, if you value quality above all.

• Press Edit->Convert to...;
• Select the target watch;
• Wait for Facemaker to convert all widgets;
• Save the converted project! You should give it a different name on the Face Info dialog (Ctrl+Shift+F), so you don't overwrite the original watch face.

This is because your windows installation lacks the necessary libraries to run the Huawei packager.
Download, unzip and install MS Visual C++ Redistributable, by running "install_all.bat" as Administrator.
You can download it from here: "Visual C++ Redistributable Runtimes All-in-One".
After the installation, restart your PC and the problem should be solved.

This can happen after you upgrade Facemaker, especially if the older version was a few versions older when compared with the new one.
Facemaker is always evolving and many new properties are added at each update.
Sometimes, changes are made that break compatibility with older versions and this error may happen.

You can solve it by first, closing Facemaker and deleting the folder "C:\Users\YOUR WINDOWS USER HERE\AppData\Roaming\Facemaker".
The AppData folder might be hidden, so make sure you enable "Hidden files and folders" on the Windows File Explorer" settings.

IMPORTANT:
Deleting this folder will erase your Facemaker settings and you'll be presented with the Facemaker Startup Wizard the next time you start it.

This usually happens because you have strange characters on the watchface name.
Go to File->Face info and replace any characters (like "ç", "ä", "é", "ã") on the Watchface name field, by it's safe version ("c", "a", "e").

This might also be caused by whitespaces (" ") in the export path. This has been detected, especially on PC systems that are not in the english language.
If the previous suggestion doesnn't work, check the export path for the watch face and choose a different target folder, one without whitespaces in none of the folders in the path.

The Health app watch face's section is not available in the US. The official app also does this.
This forces US citizens to select another country on their android device, to be able to trick the Health app into thinking it's in another country.

Usually my advice is, use a separate android device just for watch face installation. Any cheap device with Android 9 will do.
Set it to Mexico or any european country (you can change the language and time settings afterwards).
You should do this before installing the modified Health app. Also make sure that "HMS Core" is not installed, like described in the installation instructions.
Since you'll be using a separate device just to install watch faces, make sure you use the same Huawei ID on both the Health apps, in order to keep the watch from resetting when switching devices.

You're uploading from a folder on the phone called "downloads" or "download".
It seems Huawei disabled upload when the user selects a watch face from any folder with these names.
As weird as it seems, many have had this problem and the solution is simple.
Create another folder and put your HWT there, before selecting it to upload to the watch.

You can also try to use another android file explorer.

This happens with the Huawei GT4.
All you have to do is repeat as many times as necessary, until the watch accepts the watch face.
Usually when this happens, at the second or third tries it works.

According to some users, uninstalling the watch faces that come by default, also works. So try this if nothing else works.

The watch face name may have whitespaces or unsupported characters.
Remove whitespaces and any language specific characters from the watch face name (on File->Face info) and re-export or rename the exported HWT file.

Also make sure that the export path has no whitespaces (use a simple path, like C:\watchfaces to export your watch faces).

Custom watch faces do not show a preview image on the Health app.
This is because the preview image comes from the Huawei store, not the watch face itself.

Also, sometimes, the custom watch face won't show on the "Mine" list at all.
All you have to do is restart the Health app and the custom watch face will become listed.

This usually happens for two reasons:

1. Your screen resolution is too low. Minimum recommended resolution is 1366x768, in order for Facemaker to show all information correctly on the screen.
2. If your screen resolution is larger than 1366x768, check your Windows scale settings.
   One user had this problem with a 1920x1080 resolution, but his Windows scale settings were set to 200%.
   It turns out that, on a 1920x1080 screen with 200% scale, you actually have a 960x540 resolution.
   

You can also try changing the Zoom Factor in the Preferences, lowering it, but consider this option a last resort, because it can cause unpredictable results.

Most likely, your firewall or antivirus are preventing Facemaker from connecting to the internet, to check for updates.
You have nothing to worry about. Facemaker doesn't have a line of malicious code, so you can safely allow access on your firewall or antivirus, by adding an exception to the Facemaker executable.
You can try to start Facemaker in Admin mode and test the "Check for updates" link on the Help->About window, if it works, then it's most likely your firewall.

If not, then your IP range might be flagged by the Facemaker's host. To solve it, you may try a free VPN of some sort. If the VPN solution works, you may send me the IP you were using, so I can inform the Facemaker host to whiteflag your IP range.

You need to install a specific modded Huawei Health app version.
You'll find this version on the Facemaker repository, on the folder "FACEMAKER LATEST VERSION/Huawei Health Mod APKs".
Download the v13.1.4.310, install it and the problem should be solved.

As usual, make sure you do not have HMS Core installed on the phone too.

There are currently many other functionalities not covered by this manual, but I encourage you to experiment and try each feature.
It is also advisable to watch as many videos as you can from the Facemaker Youtube channel. On it, you have a wealth of information and techniques that will make your life so much easier.
